Tom Fox Receives Environmental Award

In case you’ve been wondering what Tom Fox has been up to since he appeared in one of the first LOEBlog posts, he hasn’t been resting. On November 8th, in Naples, he received the prestigious Mediterranean Award for his efforts on behalf of the environment.

The annual award was begun in 1996 and is given in the categories of peace, culture, media, art, diplomacy, cinema and the environment.  Other recipients have included the Kings of Spain, Morocco and Jordan; the Prime Ministers of Italy, Turkey and Portugal; Presidents of Macedonia, France and Malta; two Nobel Laureates; German Chancellor Minister Angela Merkel; Leah Rabin; the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem; Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe; the Director General of UNESCO; media outlets El Mundo, Al Jazeera and CNN, as well as writers, religious leaders, singers, scientists, architects, journalists, diplomats and businessmen.

Fox’s award is an original sculpture Totem della Pace (Symbol of Peace) by the sculptor Mario Molinari, who was a founding member of the Foundazione Mediterraneo. It reads: "For his commitment to safeguarding the environment and building coalitions as well as his important work in disseminating the culture of the sea.  An example for future generations and a didactic educational tool to all coastal countries of the Mediterranean in order to disseminate the values of love for the sea and the protection of its habitat."
